North American Institutes have detected many hints, and developed many theories, about how magnet therapy works, because magnet therapy works through many different mechanisms. Thus there have to be several layers to the complicated answer to the simple question "How do magnets cure pain" For us, it is not ONLY the theories that are of primary importance, but also the facts. And the fact is that permanent magnets do provide prompt and powerful pain relief for many patients.
The Search
The research is equally clear that electromagnetic fields speed up the healing of bone fractures and soft-tissue injuries to a remarkable degree, and can be effective in treating stress-related disorders, including anxiety, insomnia, and depression, even in patients resistant to drugs. Unlike heat, X-rays, and other forms of energy, magnetic fields are not obstructed or reflected by bone or other impediments, and can reach structures deep in the body. More important, in contrast to some other nontraditional approaches permanent magnets are safe, relatively inexpensive, and essentially everlasting, making them extremely cost effective.
These facts notwithstanding, we remain fascinated by the challenge of understanding the mechanism. have in no way been substantiated. IT IS INCREASED BLOOD FLOW. The easiest part of the answer to the question "How do magnets work?" � the basal layer, so to speak � is the presumption that magnetic fields promote blood flow to the affected area. This effect has been shown clearly as it applies to electromagnetism. For example, in the Sanseverino research mentioned in chapter 3, the investigators observed vasodilation (increased blood flow through expanded blood vessels) after a single exposure to an electromagnetic field. This finding mirrored those of another study and was therefore of no surprise to the researchers.~ Of course, the fact that increased blood flow occurs under the impact of electromagnetic fields does not prove that it occurs in permanent magnetic fields. Many practitioners, however, are convinced that it does. Dr. Ronald Lawrence believes that as a result of permanent magnets being moved (as their wearers move), they generate micro currents in the nerves near them that enhance blood.

The Test
Dr. Vallbona first became interested in magnets in 1994 when he used a magnet for his own knee pain and felt relief in minutes. He decided to investigate the effects of magnets on pain in most rigorous type of scientific study at Baylor's Institute for Rehabilitation Research. In this placebo-controlled, double blind study, 50 volunteers participated, 29 used real magnets; the rest were given sham devices so researchers could ensure the magnets really worked. Those who used an active magnet reported a reduction in pain (from 9.6 to 4.4) those using a sham magnet only observed a decline from 9.5 to 8.4.

The findings of this remarkable study were reported in the November issue of the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. The results have shocked many doctors who scoffed at claims for magnets' medical benefits. "We cannot explain the significant and quick pain relief reported," wrote the researchers. They speculate that the magnets may cause changes in pain-receptor cells, provoke an indirect response in the brain, or release enorphins (pain diminishing body chemicals).

One of the most recent and most dramatic studies took place at Houston's Baylor College of Medicine. Fifty patients suffering from a painful condition known as post-polio syndrome evaluated their pain on a ten-point pain scale. Then twenty-nine of the patients were treated with real magnets taped to the most sensitive part of their bodies, while the 21 remaining patients were treated with a placebo device. After only 45 minutes of treatment, a whopping 22 of the 29 who received real magnet treatment said their pain had improved by an average of five points. In the control group, only four patients said they felt better and the pain score was reduced by only one point.

Another study -- this one at UCLA -- looked at fourteen patients with carpal tunnel syndrome. Researchers compared the amount of electrical impulses that could pass through the patients wrists before and after they wore magnets for one week. The findings? Seven days of magnet therapy resulted in "significant improvement" for twelve of the fourteen participants. Similarly, a study of nurses with intense menstrual pain showed dramatic decreases in pain among the women who wore real magnets vs. the ones who wore only ordinary pieces of metal.
